#PeakPerformance: Make 2019/20 the best year yet!

It might feel like the summer was a million miles away (although sadly not the temperature yet) but the overload of ‘back to school’ adverts and offers are a huge reminder that the term actually just started.  The beginning of the school year can be a very manic time, filled with getting people up to speed, juggling schedule changes and managing new parents.  It is so easy for us to get caught up in making sure the everyday is taken care of and our students are excelling to the extent that we can look up and it’s already the winter break and we haven’t had a minute to ourselves!  The fact is that teachers have one of the hardest jobs in the world and it can often be exhausting, both mentally and physically. If you are someone who is dedicated to providing the best opportunities and future for your students then you need to prioritise looking after yourself as well.  A happy, healthy you will always have more energy, creativity and passion – which your students will always respond to in a positive manner.

So, for those of you who have got caught up in the back to school crazy, we thought we would take a minute to share some tips and advice on how to get the most out of the upcoming school year, how to look after yourself and ways to find a better balance for your goals and dreams.

Focus on fabulous fitness

Now we aren’t expecting you to start training for athletic super stardom (unless that has always been a hidden dream), but a lot of people don’t understand the importance of fitness or feel like the concept is too intimidating.  In reality fitness doesn’t mean abs of steel and four hours a day in the gym, it is about finding the right balance for you.  Sitting or standing for long periods doesn’t do our bodies any good and when we take even a short amount of time to move and challenge them, every part of us feels better. There are no right or wrong answer to the ways in which you can stay active, choose what feels best for your body.It could be joining a gym, it could be doing a fun class like Zumba or Aquaspin, why not try joining a sports team like football or netball?  Need to be encouraged?  Try a bootcamp.  Hate exercise?  Try walking on the beach or fun activities like Bounce. There are so many ways in which you can stay active and all of them will help you be the very best you.

Adventurously experiment

Getting out of our comfort zone can often do wonders for the way our minds work.  It prevents us experiencing ‘ruts’ or feeling stagnate.  It can help us grow our knowledge, meet new people and give us loads of lovely endorphins that help keep a happy, healthy mind-set.  There are so many ways to push your boundaries as well, and they can be at any level on the adventure scale to have the same impact. At the top end you have things like sky-diving and zip-lining, but you can also experiment with flavours by choosing new restaurants or trying a new recipe at home.  You can experiment with hobbies by picking up a new activity, or experiment with your social group by attending new events and meeting new people.  Adding something different to your schedule can be very empowering and you never know quite were it might lead…

Commit to ‘me-time’

Most teachers tend to be very good at handling the schedule of their students and school and making sure they include all the necessities, but not so good at doing that in their own lives.  After long days it can be very easy to slip into a routine that covers the bear minimum, but doesn’t help you feel better overall.  Whilst ordering food and sitting down with Netflix is sometimes exactly the right thing to do, you also need to make sure you include quality time for yourself as much as you possibly can.  This can be especially difficult for those with children, who may feel like they never have time to themselves, but carving out even a small window can work wonders.  If you can, try and schedule a weekly or monthly time in which you can be calm, peaceful and relaxed, the ideal way to rejuvenate body and mind.  It could be a massage or a meditation session, a trip to therapy or dinner out, a long (uninterrupted) bath or an afternoon with a good book.  There are so many options to suit every budget or situation, you just have to find the right one for you and do it as much as possible – you deserve it!

Expand your skills

Looking after others shouldn’t compromise the way we look after ourselves, especially when it comes to our happiness or future.  Just as you are helping to prepare your students for a brighter outlook, so too should you make sure to help yourself reach your goals. The pursuit of knowledge is one of the greatest human qualities and one that helps us grow, develop and amaze ourselves.  If you have had a long term dream or have been keen to step up in your career, there are so many ways you can add to your repertoire or learn something new.Perhaps it might be a language, maybe you want to play an instrument or conquer the art of something creative, whatever it might be, you are more than capable of doing it and the sense of accomplishment will have a profoundly positive impact.  If you are keen to grow your professional skills or career, you shouldn’t hesitate to hold back your potential.  At TELLAL we have a vast range of courses that could help teachers at all levels take the next step, perhaps even into a long coveted leadership role?  The important thing is that whichever skill or talent you would like to master, you should never stop believing in your abilities or your potential.
